The Company
KONTRON was founded in 1987 to provide rugged portable computer platforms based on industrial PC technology. In 1992, the company added flat-panel TFT display technology and formed two business units, the Computer Products Group (CPG) and Display Products Group (DPG). Both groups have grown substantially through new customers, products and applications, making Dolch the leader in today's rapidly expanding harsh-environment computing and display markets.
The Markets
Test & Measurement is KONTRON major marketplace. Applications in network & telecom test, data acquisition and signal analysis form the primary field of use. Additional applications include PLC programming, aerospace flight line testing and medical monitoring. Dolch's flat-panel display products are used as dedicated operator interfaces and display devices where environmental conditions are harsh and space is at a premium. Key applications include factory-floor process control, geophysical data acquisition and process monitoring in vehicular and aerospace environments.
Products
Ultra-rugged portable PC's span the full range of high-end portable computing needs, from slim, lightweight notebook and attaché models to large-screen, multi-slot workstations. All units feature "bulletproof" construction with metal cases, special environmental seals and shock mounting to withstand the rigors of transport and use in harsh locations. Expansion slots readily adapt the basic systems to customer specific applications with industry standard add-in cards in ISA, PCI, or PC/104 form-factors. KONTRON broad line of rugged and environmentally sealed flat-panel TFT color monitors and intelligent displays are available in a variety of screen sizes and resolutions. They offer panel, rack, pedestal or stand alone mounting, high brightness, touch-screens and special caseworks that meet strict NEMA and IEC standards. These products are widely used as operator interfaces and information displays where space is at a minimum and conditions are harsh.
Environmental Engineering
KONTRON is constantly testing the durability of its products to meet the standards of IEC 68-1, MIL-STD-810, NEMA 250, and ISTA Project 2A. These standards and others are applied to the special requirements of our customers enabling KONTRON products to meet the truly ruggedized needs of their applications. KONTRON has incorporated many mechanical environmental tests and product qualification guidelines into the early phases of the product design to insure issues such as durability, construction, and quality are built in. These tests include applying random vibration both operational and non-operational, typically over a frequency range of 3 to 500 Hz, as well as drop and topple testing per IEC 68-2-31. KONTRON products are subjected to thermal profile evaluation to gauge the effectiveness of the cooling design, including the use of engineered heat pipe solutions. Final temperature and humidity testing is performed in a Thermotron SE-series chamber. Dynamic testing is performed on an electrodymanic shock and vibration test system manufactured by Unholtz-Dickie.
